Scalextric
Just the thing when you want to un-wind
My Scalextric . The track length is around 57ft and is on a 9ft by 5ft board
The Gantry incorporates 5 Red start lights and a Yellow and Green light above to show who has put the fasted lap
Fed up paying over the top for grain of wheat bulbs then take a look at this from Maplin code Number PG77J - 12V Submin Clear. Price a whopping . . 49 pence (12/12/2006)
http://www.maplin.co.uk/ in the search in top Left corner type PG77J
On the left Maplins and on the right Scalextric the photo is optical illusion as they are the same size but a little longer but do the job fine so save your self some money great for track lights and CAR lights the track lights run on an old Black Scalextric transformer and light up the track well
So you want to make some lights for your track well see how I made mine

Ok in the above Photo's I used the door lock to bend the tube around some pipe and then with a junior hack saw cut a piece off to allow the Bulb to shine on the track

Place the bulb in side and hey presto one lamp just 11 more to go ? but when its done it looks like this
looking good or what
and no flash on the camera
and again still no flash and you can see the track really well

and then to add a few characters around the track.
Also note the grass this is stuck onto foam ceiling tiles smooth side.
and makes a great infill and more realistic which is level with the track. . .
And Below is the plan of the track with Scalextric part numbers

UP DATE 12/03/07
Well after running on my Scalextric track for some years I looked on the internet for other users and found loads of articles and info.
Then I found a local track / club in Loughborough so I went along and had to have a look at these wooden tracks. I was impressed . . . not with the age of the track but how FLAT it is compared to my old plastic track
My old track ready to be uprooted

So it was time to think how to go about the transfer from Plastic to wood and then there is the braid or tape option. . .
After Looking around the web I found out that Braid for a home track was to be expensive so this then left just the tape option , , , Hmm magnets don't attract to copper. Now what if I just put some metal just under the surface would this work and how could this be done.
Well I can only wait to see but in the meantime this is how my table was. . before wood slot

Then I just needed to put some more 12mm MDF on top and route the same track out . .
Ok here we go 10th February 2007 its 5pm
A plan view. It was a fast track with plenty of twists and each lane is 17.02 metres

Here we go the first cut & the first one is very impressive

The first corner complete . . can I play on it yet after 1 1/2 days work almost done

Not bad its getting there

ABOVE I had to route out room for the hinges and for got to lock of the depth stop

Well at least the slot is ok. depth is 8mm & 4mm width

Now I still wanted the magnatraction that you have with SCALEXTRIC so I came up with this Idea

Now I have them scissors that claim to cut metal you may have seen the T.V. advert where they cut a coke tin in half well these tins are Ally not metal (try a slot car on it, if it attracts then go ahead)
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> NOTE:- TAKE CARE SHARP EDGES <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Next is to cut a small piece off and take off the paint

Then with a template do a rough drawing of the bends

Cut them out don't worry about the curling

With a small bit of wood hold one piece down with your thumb and in the other hand run the wood down it and hey presto one piece of thin tin ready to be glued in place

Note how I cut a small chamfer to lower the tin into (red line)
And below put some tape on it and test

And now for a test with a 9volt battery
Sorry about poor light
Below an over view of last weeks work 2 or 3 hrs a night

Below Impressive or what. . . and put a 9volt battery on and hey presto

Above now if I did the whole circuit its magnetised. . . So do I need tape or tin can ?
